THE ATKINSONS
THE
ATKINSONS
The Atkinsons formed in the fall of 2003 in
Richmond, VA. Their main focus was to write and perform their own brand of
original music, as well as incorporating select cover songs that complement
their Americana style. Rooted in rock, touched by country, and rich in
harmonies, The Atkinsons merge their signature sound with bittersweet tales of
woe and heartbreak. Their originals are written with a hardcore honesty that
chronicles Americas lost and lonely souls and their life struggles and turmoil.
Influences range from Whiskeytown, Old 97s and Son Volt - to Old Crow Medicine
Show, The Avett Brothers and Scott Miller - to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers,
The Rolling Stones and Nirvana. The soulful lyrics and whiskey-stained vocals of
Dickie Wood are complemented with three-part harmonies offered up by Jamie Wood
and Kris Krull. Kris also gives the band a new edge on drums working with Ricky
Breland on bass to create a pounding rhythm section. Combine Mike Ferry's fiddle
with Jeff Williams mandolin, and you got a potent mix of rock and country
creating one kickass rockin' Americana band.
"American
Gothic” (self-released): "Dickie Wood has a lot of words floating
around in his head. That’s the thought that comes to mind listening to the
new release from this ubiquitous Richmond group. Serving the role as lead
singer and guitarist, Wood is accompanied by multi-instrumentalist Jeff
Williams, bassist Ricky Breland, fiddler Mike Ferry, drummer Kris Krull and
percussionist/ vocalist Jamie Wood. Throughout 10 tracks (and a bonus track),
they weave stories of loneliness, desertion, romance, boozing, traveling . . .
very much a cross-section of the American experience. Songs are written
more in the form of rhyming prose than as couplets, which helps bolster the
storytelling. Sonically, the group resembles alt-rock pioneers Uncle Tupelo or early
Ryan Adams. The idea behind the music is well-communicated, and the songs
are executed with precision. The Atkinsons have been performing on Richmond
stages for more than four years, and the time and experience are reflected in
the maturity of this recording."

THE TATERS

PENNYSHAKER
Formed in 2001, Pennyshaker began in Richmond,
VA. Original music was the focus, created by way of influences like Jill Scott
and Jimi Hendrix. The sound was slightly retro, but in a way limited to
emulation - not simulation. With powerful vocals, guitar driven rhythm, and
infectious melodies, Pennyshaker delivers edgy neo-soul fused with rock and
blues.
Pennyshaker's songs are created in real time by
real players. The music is touched by digital but based in analog. The songs are
written by the collective with each player contributing their own feeling and
interpretation of the idea at hand. Although the band consists of experienced
players, each talented at their own instrument, the purpose of the songs and
performance is not to simply impress or entertain, but to give the listener
something more than what they had when they walked through the door.
John Cockrell of Richmond.com wrote: "In a
music mainstream clogged with the over-processed hip-hop and the eyeliner of the
pop-punk and screamo wave of recent years, it's healthy to swim to the surface,
take a breath of fresh air, and find bands on the scene doing something a little
different - something that cleanses the ear's palate and opens different,
diverse perspectives through their approach to music. Pennyshaker is one
of those bands doing something different."

THE TATERS

59H2O
59H2O 's original compositions are songs you can
sing along to that still hit an emotional chord. The strong female vocal lines
showcase the insightful lyrics, while the locked-down rhythm section carries
each song. The band's layered songwriting technique allows both guitars and
keyboards to create a strong presence - what results is music with depth, power
and emotion.
The band has performed since 1995 at various local and regional venues, from
festivals in Richmond and Virginia Beach to club shows in New York, Nags Head,
NC, DC, and shows throughout Virginia. 59H2O's work ethic and talent have earned
a devoted fan base throughout the southeast region.
59H2O embodies the notion that, when it comes down to it, music is all about
feeling. Each member's passion for their craft comes together to make some truly
powerful songs.

THE TATERS
OMINOTAGO
Ominotago is a Native American name
meaning "beautiful voice". Beau
started his musical journey at the age of 14, when he picked up his first
guitar. He was raised on big bands and Motown and still considers it to be some
of his favorite music. His other musical influences include Janis
Joplin, The Beatles, Counting Crows, Bruce Springsteen, Aretha Franklin, and Led
Zeppelin, to name a few. Beau says that the highlight of his musical
career thus far is meeting Chelsea, his girl and bandmate. He has now been
playing guitar and singing for about 10 years. An interesting fact: Beau's
first name is actually Horace! His mom gave him his nickname Beau when he
was a baby.
Appropriately named after "Chelsea
Morning", a Joni Mitchell song, Chelsea started picking guitar
at 14 as well. She was influenced early on by tons of classic
rock that her parents often played, like the Beatles, Bob Marley, and Led Zeppelin.
And from her older sister's room, the dramatic songwriting of artists like Tori
Amos, influenced her greatly. When she started writing songs her freshman
year, she drew inspiration from Jewel and Dave Matthews and many others.
Visual art has always been a major passion as well; she always designs the album
art.
Together these self-taught musicians have
captivated audience after audience playing an
eclectic blend of folk, rock, pop, blues, reggae, funk, and Motown.
Armed with only a couple acoustics and a hand drum, they rock out to songs like
"Sweet Child of Mine" and "Signed, Sealed, Delivered" and
YES they really make it work! With inventive harmonies and powerful guitar
playing, these songs sound like new.
