THE TATERS
THE
TATERS
The
Taters play an eclectic mix of roots rock, pop, country, skiffle &
Americana, a sound that's been compared favorably to a mixture of Everlys,
Orbison, Beatles, and Nick Lowe.
When
Craig Evans and Brad Tucker started singing together in the early 1980's,
neither could have guessed how long that partnership would last. With the new
release of Just One Night, their 4th album as The Taters, it's obvious to
listeners that their music is still getting stronger all the time. And now those
new to the band can get a glimpse of what goes on during a live show the
interplay and harmonies, and just the wide range of song styles that make up
their musical identity.
A lot
has been written over the last 10 years about the influences of the band, and
comparisons have been made to Roy Orbison, The Everly Brothers, The Mavericks,
Nick Lowe and others. "We decided it was time to do a live album this time
out, said Craig in a recent interview, since that's where we meet most of our
listeners, and vice versa. It gave us a chance to do some covers that are
regular requests at our shows, and to kind of pay tribute to some of the
influences that have guided us for so long. We're also using the album as a
chance to re-work some of the tunes from our early albums. The cool thing was
how well all of it came together in a single show!
Just One
Night was recorded in Ashland , VA , and includes Craig & Brad along with a
host of side Taters, including Diana Carr (pedal steel) , Stu Grimes (drums),
Jim Wark (guitar), Ned Henson (guitar), and Alan MacEwen & Chris Watling
from The Grandsons on horns.
Writing
in Billboard magazine, the internationally published "bible" of the
music industry, critic Gordon Ely described the Taters as "determinedly-and
gleefully-forging a path with no limits or end in sight. This is music for which
you've been waiting a long, long time... Without a trace of self-consciousness
or pretension, the Taters draw up a formula that can rightly be claimed as their
own".

THE TATERS
THE
ORDERLIES
The Orderlies are a trio of singer-songwriters
and multi-instrumentalists based in Richmond, Virginia, with over 40 years
combined professional performance experience and a rare blend of technique,
fluency, and passion. Their music is primarily acoustic and influenced by
popular music of the last four decades. One of their strengths is our
fluid sense of musical arrangement. From moment to moment they listen
to each other, adjusting dynamics and instrumental accompaniment on the
fly to suit (or to shape) the mood of the room.
Radcliffe Burt was one of the leaders of
the Millan and Kenzie band based in Atlanta. They toured the east
coast from 1991 to 1995, when they relocated to Boulder, CO, built a regional
following, and enjoyed significant local radio play. Having produced five
CDs of passionate, earnest music, they parted ways in 1999, and Radcliffe moved
to Richmond. He sings, plays guitar, and writes songs.
Amy Henderson has been performing as a soloist
and bandleader since the early nineties, between Atlanta, South Carolina, and
Richmond. In addition to her work in the Orderlies, she continues to perform as
a soloist and with the Amy Henderson Trio (sometimes with Rad
and/or John sitting in). Amy sings, plays guitar and harmonica, and writes
songs.
John Priestley learned most of what he knows
about songwriting as a a member of the critically acclaimed (but popularly
ignored) college rock band, rake, in Blacksburg, VA (and later London, UK) from
1989 to 1992. Later in the 90's, his interests shifted to ambient
music. He took up the Chapman Stick and began playing improvisational jazz
and ambient music with William Bajzek. In addition to the Orderlies, John
occasionally plays solo ambient music under the stage name of Vilam
Priest. John sings, plays guitar, mandolin, and Stick, and writes songs.

THE TATERS
MOOSSA
Before you get to wondering, this Richmond, VA band is not your typical reggae band, they are however a roots band
with a definitive reggae feel. The vocals are solid, the tracks are good,
and the feel will bring a bit of warmth to the chilly weather that is bound to
hit sooner rather than later. You get a feel that Moosa not only perform
the music, but rather become the music and draw on influences from country to
rock, and almost everything in between.
The band have a flair for the music they lay
down instilling a good feeling on all that listen. There is some very nice
guitar work here from Jim Fabricatore that ranges and crosses musical boundaries
too, an air of progressive jazz, funk and straight ahead rock while keeping the
sound all the time constant. John Moosa's vocals are an experience in
themselves as he ranges from rootsy rough edged to smooth and sleek.
A positive CD in a negative world, Moosa can
transport you to a different existence if you feel bombarded by the news of
late, the feeling here is harmonious and peaceful as well as smart and
fresh. Nailing down a category for this band is an impossibility, it's not
that they are still searching for a sound, it's more that they perform and blend
genres with confidence and true ability.
Not to be forgotten, Ryan Davis does a great jog
laying down the bass line, and Scott Lewis is at home with the drums and
percussions. The overall feel here is that of honesty, ability, and energy
that can also transcend age barriers as there is almost assuredly something here
for the masses. "Dragon's Den", "Stained Glass
Window", and "Break Apart" are pure examples of the diversity and
talent Moosa have put forth here.

BILLY
RAY HATLEY & THE SHOW DOGS
Billy Ray Hatley is a lead singer, rhythm guitarist, harmonica player, and songwriter and has been packing the house with Richmond, Virginia's roadhouse rockers "Big City" for the past fifteen years.
With over 30 years experience and three CDs, Billy has established himself as Richmond's premier frontman and singer.
With his first Show Dogs CD released in 2003, "More Years Than I Got", Billy
proved himself an impressive studio artist and accomplished songwriter.
Their most recent CD "Deuce" is even more impressive and is bound to
gain the band even more attention and praise.
"One of the main characters in the forthcoming novel TOWN HALL (which profiles the early 70's in a southern college town) is based loosely on Hatley and will make him
famous." - Michael deRosset Strong, Chapel Hill, NC In 2003 Hatley had his song "One More Chance" released by
Michael Burks on Alligator records, and was the featured Alligator records contribution on the August 2003 compilation disc in Blues Review magazine.
Review for
"More Years Than I Got": "For those of us who have followed Billy Ray Hatley's songwriting and performing art for years, finally we have a portrait we can take home. This collection of personal stories for everyman showcases skillful writing, with stellar performances and production.
Is it blues, country, rhythm & blues, americana? It's all of the above.
Show Dogs on the runway, in all their glory. See for yourself; you won't be
disappointed." -Page Wilson, Out of the Blue Radio Review 88.9 FM

THE TATERS
OMINOTAGO
Ominotago is a Native American name
meaning "beautiful voice". Beau
started his musical journey at the age of 14, when he picked up his first
guitar. He was raised on big bands and Motown and still considers it to be some
of his favorite music. His other musical influences include Janis
Joplin, The Beatles, Counting Crows, Bruce Springsteen, Aretha Franklin, and Led
Zeppelin, to name a few. Beau says that the highlight of his musical
career thus far is meeting Chelsea, his girl and bandmate. He has now been
playing guitar and singing for about 10 years. An interesting fact: Beau's
first name is actually Horace! His mom gave him his nickname Beau when he
was a baby.
Appropriately named after "Chelsea
Morning", a Joni Mitchell song, Chelsea started picking guitar
at 14 as well. She was influenced early on by tons of classic
rock that her parents often played, like the Beatles, Bob Marley, and Led Zeppelin.
And from her older sister's room, the dramatic songwriting of artists like Tori
Amos, influenced her greatly. When she started writing songs her freshman
year, she drew inspiration from Jewel and Dave Matthews and many others.
Visual art has always been a major passion as well; she always designs the album
art.
Together these self-taught musicians have
captivated audience after audience playing an
eclectic blend of folk, rock, pop, blues, reggae, funk, and Motown.
Armed with only a couple acoustics and a hand drum, they rock out to songs like
"Sweet Child of Mine" and "Signed, Sealed, Delivered" and
YES they really make it work! With inventive harmonies and powerful guitar
playing, these songs sound like new.
